About Dr. Joshua Sserufusa Zake Kangaawo (Ph.D.)


For his Doctoral studies, he was based at the Institute of Soil Research and the Centre/Institute of Development Research and his thesis focuses on, ‘Understanding the impacts of climate change and variability on key selected smallholder banana farming systems in Central Uganda.’ He conducted research during his Masters and Doctoral studies, whose outputs are published in high impact factor international peer reviewed journals. These include best practices and innovations that contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation in smallholder farming systems in Uganda. Besides, he has been actively involved and therefore contributed to the development and implementation of various policies that address drought, land and soil degradation in Uganda. Some of these include: The National Land policy, National Land use policy, National Soils Policy (draft), National Climate Change Policy (2015), National Environment Management Policy, National Environment Act (2019), National Climate Change Act (2021), National Forestry Policy (2001), National Wetlands Policy (draft), National Energy Policy, National REDD+ Strategy, National Adaptation Plan for the Health sector.

This is a soil sampling exercise for one of the clients in Luweero district, central Uganda

Currently, Dr. Joshua Zake (Ph.D.) delivers on the following roles:


i) An Independent Senior Scientist and Consultant on Agriculture, Soil Science, Environment, Natural Resources Management, Climate Change, Life Sciences/Social and Governance.

ii) A certified trainer (by Green Project Management) for Sustainable Project Management.

iii) Technical and Strategic Advisor at Regenerate Africa, where I provide technical and strategic advisories that have inform the Regenerate Africa programme design and implementation.

iv) Member of the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) Roster of Experts on the National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).

v) A United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Independent Expert.

vi) An Initiative Reviewer Subject Matter Expert for the Independent Science for Development Council of the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR) (since 2022), and

vii) Proprietor of Integrated Farms – Uganda, whose goal is to, ´Demonstrate Nature based solutions for community-based climate change adaptation, mitigation; improved livelihoods; biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of the environment and natural resources.
